I'm a proud Kirkwood High c/o '90 graduate! However, my main memories of " Mrs. Schnitz" took place after my school days were over. I was involved with the Kirkwood Junior Basketball League for several years as a coach, official and later as it's President. We used KHS gym space extensively, so I got to know Mrs. Schnitz fairly well then. She was a taskmaster, always checking to make sure that we took care of the facilities, and put the score clock away EXACTLY as the picture that she put in the box showed! I always appreciated how much she cared about those gyms, and we always did our best to comply with her wishes. I probably appreciated the way she dealt with the big problems the most. We had an issue with a young man with special needs saying inappropriate things to some of the girls in our program and interfering with some practices. I reported this to Mr Velten and Mrs. Schnitz, the high school athletic administrators. Mr Velten and I were quite upset. Mrs Schnitz calmly said, " I know his mother, let me talk to her." And just like that, it was handled with grace and dignity. Another important thing to remember is her willingness to do anything to help out. She took tickets, supervised concessions, hosted officials for home athletic events, whatever was needed to make KHS athletics successful. Rest in peace Mrs Schnitzius, and know that you impacted a lot of lives through your hard work and wisdom!
