Thomas Orr Menary, October 9, 2017, was born to Dr. Albert R. Menary and Helen O. Menary (nee Dunlop) just before the Great Depression in Cedar Rapids Iowa where he grew up. His father was a veterinarian and his mother was a nurse. He graduated from Franklin High school and worked as a draftsman before serving in the navy in the Pacific on Kwajalein Atoll at the end of WWII. Afterward he attended Iowa State College (University) and earned a degree in mechanical engineering. His future wife Ruth Shean was also from Cedar Rapids and attended Iowa State.
Tom worked as an engineer in the Midwest for Fairbanks-Morse and Del Monte and on the East Coast for Du Pont and finally Monsanto in St. Louis from 1960-1985. Tom was president of, and helped start with fellow Monsanto retirees, FormPak, Inc. a manufacturer’s representative firm. Tom was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for 69 years. He and Ruth raised their 3 sons and participated in many local activities. Tom was active at the First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood where he served as a deacon and an elder and he was also a longtime member of the Kirkwood Historical Society. Tom was an avid traveler, photographer and enjoyed the Loretto Hilton theater and dining out with family and friends. Tom enjoyed lifelong friendships from his grade school days in Iowa. Tom and his wife Ruth were caretakers to many animals along the way but especially to their beloved ‘kitties’ of many shapes and sizes.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruth and is survived by his sons Mark, Matt and Tom.
