Obituary for Jamie Monafo (McClearn)
Jamie Monafo (nee McClearn),
Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church surrounded by her family on Friday, December 8, 2017; at the age of 86. Beloved wife of the late Dr. William W. Monafo for 43 years; mother to three children, Dr. William J. Monafo, Katherine A. Kennon and James F. (Mary Beth) Monafo; blessed with seven grandchildren: Dr. Angela Monafo, Gina (Patrick) and Dominic Monafo: Katelyn and Kristopher Kennon; Nina and Luke Monafo; cherished aunt, sister and friend to many. Special gratitude to Yulonda Fields, her caregiver and close friend for the past 7 years. Born to Bunnie and James F. McClearn in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky in 1931, she was the youngest of four girls and was preceded in death by her sisters Catche, Beryl and Joyce. Jamie loved to talk about her fond memories of growing up on a farm in Belton, Kentucky. Life in the post-Depression South was challenging but always lightened by a good sense of humor, along with kindness and an easy laugh. Forced to change high schools after 11 years at Hughes-Kirk High School in Kentucky, Jamie was voted “most popular” in her new senior class in West Virginia. Jamie moved to St. Louis in 1957 after graduating from nursing school. She worked as an RN, and later a nurse anesthetist at the old Barnes Hospital, where a young surgical resident won her heart. Jamie was a dedicated mother, and after raising her children, worked as a volunteer in her husband’s burn research lab. Always proud of her Kentucky heritage, she is already keepin’ ‘em laughin’ over yonder.
