Mary Leona (Echele) Massey, fortified by the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, passed away peacefully from complications of Parkinson’s on Saturday, January 27, 2018.
Born in St. Louis on January 11, 1928, Mary was the only child of Tobias and Terese (Vogelbein) Echele. She was proud of her education. Mary attended Little Flower Elementary School and St. Joseph’s Academy before going on to earn a degree in speech therapy at Fontbonne College.
Married to John M. Massey in 1950, she was the loving mother of eight children: Mary Elizabeth (Rod) Claassen, John (Karen) Massey, Terese (Gary, deceased) Vail, Joseph Massey, James Massey, Jeffrey (Jane) Massey, Jerry Massey, and Ida Caroline Massey (deceased). Mary was also “Granmere” to thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
After her divorce, she began her career as an elementary teacher at Little Flower School, then as an Executive Assistant at McDonnell Douglas. In later life, she worked for Eagle Dental Supply and Elite Mattress. She volunteered selflessly at various venues throughout St. Louis. Her energy and devotion were seemingly endless in her involvement with her children and grandchildren and many cousins. Mary will greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, February 2nd, from 4-8 PM at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood, MO. Funeral mass will be Saturday, February 3rd, at 11 AM at Little Flower Church, 1275 Boland Place, Richmond Heights, MO.
