Obituary for Harry Hays

Harry Hays
It is with great sadness that the family of Harry Edward Hays, age 87, announces his passing on Monday, January 29, 2018. Harry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, sweetheart and best friend of 64 years, Clara Lou and their children Michael Hays (Carol Thielmeier) and Stephen (Laura) Hays. Harry will also be fondly remembered by his five grandchildren, Meghan (Ben) Bueker, Molly Hays (Mike Spiguzza), Douglas (Amy) Hays, Thomas (Nadia) Hays, Sara (Nathan) Schandl and two great-grandchildren Emily and Jacob. Harry was born and spent most of his life in St. Louis, MO, he spent his later years with his wife in their home in Innsbrook, MO.

Harry was a graduate of Clayton High School and University of Missouri Columbia where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Harry began his career as an owner/partner in his AGC commercial contractor business. He later became vice president of Gundaker Commercial Industrial Sales Inc. and manager of the firm's St. Louis office. He also served as the Commissioner for the Des Peres, MO Police and Fire Department.

Harry was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Moolah Shrine for over 50 years where he proudly served as president Reception Committee for a time. He was extremely honored and proud to serve as Chairman of Shriners Hospital for Children of St. Louis, MO. He was also an honorable member of both Royal Order of Jesters and Chancellors.

Harry was an avid golfer, he said he would have gone pro if it wasn’t for his father encouraging his education. He was an outdoorsman, enjoyed shooting sports, hunting, fishing and field trialing. He was a builder like his father, he never lived in a home that a Hays didn’t build.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 6 from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm at Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to;
