Gerald L. Phelan "Jerry"
Died peacefully with family at his side, February 3, 2018. Born in St. Louis, March 28,1932, to the late Margaret (nee Stretch) Phelan and J. Leo Phelan, the second of three children. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Phelan (nee Michenfelder); two sons, Gerald.L."Grady" Phelan, Jr. (Jill) of St. Louis, and Joseph L. Phelan (Melissa Piasecki) of Reno, NV; four grandchildren, Michael Phelan of New York City, Brian Phelan of Birmingham, AL, Elizabeth Phelan and Leo Phelan of Reno; and a sister, Rosemary Phelan, of St. Louis. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Mary "Peggy" Walsh. Jerry grew up in Webster Groves, where he and Mary also raised their family. He attended St. Louis University High School and was a graduate of Saint Louis University with degrees in geology and civil engineering. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958. In1963, Jerry joined the St. Louis District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he worked on numerous river-related projects. During the1980s, he was project manager for the state-wide Inventory of Dams in Missouri, part of the National Dam Safety Program. Following his retirement in1990, Jerry pursued his many interests. He was an outdoorsman, the family historian, a proud Irishman, an award-winning photographer, a banjo player, a sailor, an avid fly fisherman, a story teller and purveyor of "little known useless information." Above all, he was a devoted husband, and loved the company of his sons and grandchildren, with whom he shared his endless curiosity, intellect and joy in life.
Services: Mass will be celebrated February 17 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Laclede Groves, 723 S. Laclede Station Rd. 63119; reception to follow in the auditorium. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Blvd., 63110. Arrangements by Bopp Chapel.
