Adela Gerhardt Fanter (Junge)
Adela Wilhelmina (Junge) Gerhardt Fanter passed away in her sleep at the age of 92 in Kirkwood, Missouri and awoke in heaven with Jesus on Monday April 9, 2018. Adela, the daughter of Herman and Louise Junge, was born October 7, 1925 in Baldwin, IL, the youngest of 8 surviving children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was one of those blessed covenant children who never knew a day when she did not know the Lord Jesus as her Savior.
After graduating from Marissa Township High School in June 1944, she moved to St. Louis to attend Business College. While in school she worked as a live-in maid for the the Lang family of Boatman’s Bank. After graduation she worked as a secretary for Wagner Electric, but then met a handsome sailor named Wilbur Gerhardt at the Lutheran Servicemen’s Center in St. Louis during WW II. After waiting for him to return from duty in the South Pacific, performing what he euphemistically called “mopping-up operations after the war,” they were married on June 27, 1948. They enjoyed 19 years of marriage together and 4 children. Wilbur preceded her in death on February 6, 1967 after a 4-year battle with leukemia.
Adela waited 9 long, lonely years before she met Paul Fanter, a widower with two adult sons, at a Lutheran Single Adult Fellowship. They married in April 1976. Together Adela and Paul enjoyed traveling together, working in their bountiful gardens, serving their church, and helping to found a St. Louis chapter of Wycliffe Associates, an auxiliary of Wycliffe Bible Translators. Adela recalled those years as the happiest of her life. Paul preceded her in death on Feb 6, 2004, 37 years to the day after her first husband died.
After Paul’s death, Adela remained active in her church, including quilting with a circle of ladies who made quilts for Lutheran World Relief. In 2011, after a tornado severely damaged her home and property, she came to live alternately with her two daughters.
Adela is survived by her four children and two step-children -- Fred (Charlene) Gerhardt of Bridgeton; Phyllis (John) Dawson of Kirkwood; Paul Gerhardt of Memphis, TN; , Susan (Greg) Groves of Greenville, IL; Bob (Virginia) Fanter of Des Peres; David (Arleen) Fanter of Okeechobee, FL. She was a cherished grandmother to 11 grandchildren—Jon Fanter; James (Morgan) Fanter; Bart, Harry, Ford, and Nell Fanter; William Gerhardt; Stephen (Kelsey) Groves; Hannah (Matthew) Cowman; Sarah (Michael) Ward; Silas Groves; and 1 great grandchild, Camden Groves.
