Obituary for Vera Gilroy (Feathergill)

Vera Gilroy (Feathergill)
Vera Gilroy (nee Feathergill), passed away peacefully on April 20th at the young age of 87. She was born in Champaign, IL to her parents, Oscar and Lucy Feathergill. She married her husband, Richard (Dick) Gilroy and after a short time in Peoria, IL, they moved to St. Louis.

Vera loved music, singing, & Christmas caroling. Singing around the player piano at home was a must on many occasions. She enjoyed summers at the Lake of the Ozarks, traveling, reading, long walks and the annual Forest Park balloon races. She was a longtime volunteer at the Fox Theatre and season ticket holder at the Muny. A devout Catholic, she donated much of her free time to the Catholic Church and schools, especially DeSmet and St. Joseph’s Academy. After Dick passed away, Vera decided to go back to work. She was a nanny for many young children in Kirkwood and Warson Woods. She was fondly known as “Nanny Vera”.

Vera & Dick raised 4 wonderful children & were “parents “ to their children’s many friends as well. Pool parties and badminton tournaments were standard summer fare at the Gilroy’s and Vera enjoyed these times immensely. Vera was an avid sports fan. Jack Buck and the St. Louis Cardinals were always on the radio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dick, mother-in-law and best friend, Annabel & her 4 brothers. She is survived by her sons, David, Tom (Julia), John (Kelly), & daughter Mary Beth (Jeff, deceased). Grandchildren, Scott, Pam, Janet, Laura, Emilie, Ryan, & Katy. Great grandchildren, Caydence & Jensen. Many nieces & nephews. She remained very close to her previous daughters-in-law, Monique and Tracy.

She was a wonderful friend to many & will be truly missed. Heaven received a gift.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Delmar Gardens Chesterfield and Palliative Care for their wonderful care of our mother.

Visitation at The Church of the Annunziata,9305 Clayton Road, at Cella, Friday, May 4th, 10:00 am followed by Mass at 11:00 am. Interment Private. Friends & family are welcome to join us @ the Jefferson Grill 127 W. Jefferson Ave, Kirkwood from 2:00- 5:00pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions preferred to Forest Park Forever or the Alzheimer’s Association.
