Obituary for Douglas Aldrich

Douglas Aldrich
Aldrich, Douglas R., of Webster Groves, MO, special love of Barbara Field, passed away June 1, 2018. Doug was born and grew up in Galesburg, IL. He excelled academically and on the tennis court. He won many local and state tennis championships and went on to play tennis at Northwestern University where he was also a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and the U.S. Naval Academy. He won letters in tennis at Northwestern and the Naval Academy and held several national rankings.
After graduating, Doug served aboard the battleship USS Mexico in the South Pacific and elsewhere before entering Naval flight training. He resigned his commission in 1948 and joined the Texas oil industry and later the construction business, living in St. Louis, Seattle, Chicago and Washington D.C. He met Barbara at Hilton Head, SC after both had retired. Together they enjoyed all the island benefits, beach, golf, tennis, bridge and an active social life. They traveled extensively even into Doug’s 90’s.
Doug is survived by Barbara and her daughter Pamela Field of Kirkwood, MO; six children, Nancy, Chicago, IL; Patty (Joe) Aldrich-Gassmann; Peter (Simonee), San Diego, CA; Andrew, Detroit, MI; Charles Fargo, ND and Jeff (Julie), Washington DC. Nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held in Galesburg, IL. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or de Greeff Hospice House.
