Sister Mary Janice Meiners Rsm
Sister Mary Janice Meiners died on June 6, 2018 at Mercy Hospital, St. Louis, MO following a brief illness. Born in St. Louis, Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1948 and was looking forward to celebrating her 70th Jubilee as a Sisters of Mercy, August 2018.
Born in St. Louis, MO, February 8, 1930 to George Francis Meiners and Clara Margaret Harke Meiners. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Herbert, and a well-beloved niece, Brenda Schopp. She is survived by her sisters, Joan Rothchild and Jean Boehmer, along with a number of nieces and nephews.
In her early ministry, Sister taught in elementary school in Gillespie, IL. She then received her BSN Degree from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, TX along with a Master of Arts in Nursing Supervision from Columbia University, NY. Sister ministered in health care in hospitals in Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas. For two years she nursed in a leprosy hospital in Guyana, South America. Sister volunteered with the Red Cross. She responded to the disaster of 9/11. She served on the Governing Board for service to victims and families of Ground Zero.
Sister was extremely dedicated to those less fortunate. She took every opportunity to created ways to provide for the basic necessities of life for those in need. She “reused” almost everything and showed others how to do the same. Sister loved helping others and being creative.
Sister moved to Catherine’s Residence in 2016 and continued using her creativity and dedication to the Sisters of Mercy.
Services: Visitation Mon., June 11, 4 – 6 pm followed by 6pm Mass at Mercy Center, 2039 N. Geyer Rd. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
