Sr. Michael Marie Flannery
Flannery, Sister Michael Marie, RSM, entered eternal life on June 17, 2018 at Catherine’s Residence, St. Louis following a stroke. Sister was 87 years old. She was born in St. Louis MO to Michael and Agnes Marie Stelzeni Flannery. She graduated from Visitation Academy and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1956. Sister earned her BSN degree from St. Louis University and her MS degree from Catholic University in Washington DC. She was one of the first mid-wives in St. Louis following her training at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Fe NM. Sister served as obstetrical supervisor/administrator/director at St. John’s Hospitals in Springfield-Cape Girardeau and St. Louis for over thirty years. In 2014, as a legacy, Mercy Hospital St. Louis dedicated the labor and delivery department to Sister Michael Marie. Following her retirement, Sister volunteered at Wellston Center in St. Louis.
Sister moved to Catherine’s residence in 2011 where she continued ministry as sacristan, holiday decorator along with other contributions to the community. For over fifty years Sister Michael Marie’s mother made decorated Christmas stockings for the babies at Mercy Hospital. Sister has continued this tradition with one hundred fifty stockings for the new-borns. Her family has decided to keep this tradition.
Sister was an avid Cardinal fan and enjoyed attending the games when possible, her second best was watching them on TV.
Sister Michael Marie was dedicated to her community of Mercy, her family and continued many connections with those from Mercy Hospital. Sister is survived by her sister-in-law, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
A welcoming prayer service will be held Thur., June 21 at 4 pm with Funeral Liturgy at 6 pm in the Mercy Center Chapel, 2039 N. Geyer Rd. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
