The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of James Banks can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Obituary for James Banks III

James Banks III
James W. Banks III, M.D.

Born in Beckley, WV, the youngest child of James W Banks II, M.D. and Martha Nemec Banks. Jim graduated from South Hagerstown High School, in Hagerstown, MD, where he excelled in sports, as well as academics. He was a member of the Maryland High School State Championship basketball team in 1974. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, MO and received his medical degree from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. He practiced medicine in Indiana, Virginia, Kentucky, and Missouri.

For many years, he practiced medicine as he would say—from birth to the grave. Then he became a headache specialist. Most recently, he had been appointed to the board of the National Headache Foundation (headaches.org).

Jim was a member of Covenant Presbyterian church. He was on the founding committee for Faith Christian School, Roanoke, VA. He loved sports and was an avid fly fisherman and gardener. One of his unusual accomplishments was being on the first USA National Boomerang Team in the early 80’s.

He was the beloved husband of Evelyn Banks, M.D. (nee Rector); loving father of Rebekah (Gray) Ewing, Rachel (Stefan) Novosel, Ian Banks, and James W. Banks IV; cherished grandfather of Caedmon, Rhodes, and Leland Ewing, and Silas Novosel.

He is also survived by his dear stepmother, Lois F. Banks; brother, McRae C. Banks (Lucy); and sisters, Martha Banks Harding (Michael), M. Caperton Banks Hubbard (Marc), and Bettie Banks Stammerjohn (David). As well as his mother-in-law, Norma Rector Triplett (George); sisters-in-law, Jane Rector Bennett (Calvin) and Susan Rector Young (Rick); and nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

Jim was pre-deceased by his parents, his father-in-law, Robert R. Rector M.D., and brothers-in-law David L Sikarskie P.E., and David Riggleman.

A memorial service will be held Monday, July 23rd, 2:00 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2143 Ballas Road, Town & Country, MO, 63131. Interment private.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Christian School or Covenant Church Building Fund 2143 N. Ballas Road, St. Louis, MO 63131; Faith Christian School, 3585 Buck Mountain Rd, Roanoke, VA, 24018; Botetourt County Fire and EMS, 205 North Roanoke Street, Suite 1, Fincastle, VA 24090; or a charity of your choice.
