Coretta Schroer (Hammacher)
Schroer, Coretta Alice (nee Hammacher) Monday, August 20, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Charles M. Schroer; loving mother of Melody (Troy Deppermann) Schroer, and Terry (Terri) Schroer and her beloved dog, Lola; cheerful friend to everyone who knew her.
Coretta was an active participant in life. An avid roller skater, she met her husband Charles at the rink where he was a skating judge. They married, as she would later say, so he could no longer judge her. She attended Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and worked as a Radiologic Technologist for Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes Hospital. She continued her training with Washington University School of Medicine, becoming a Gastrointestinal Assistant. She eventually became supervisor of the Gastroenterology Lab at Barnes Hospital, later moving to Christian Hospital North East and then to Digestive Disease Specialists. Her career as an R.T. and G.I. Assistant spanned nearly forty years.
In 2004, Coretta and Charles moved to the Caribbean island of Montserrat. After Charles’ death that same year, Coretta returned to work, becoming Manager of the X-Ray Department for the Ministry of Health in Montserrat. She also continued her education, receiving her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) in Radiological Science from the University of Science, Arts and Technology. She loved entertaining at her home overlooking the (active) volcano and the ocean and quickly made many friends on the island. Her health necessitated a return to St. Louis after ten years of island life, but it did not slow her down. She remained active with the Missouri Society of Radiologic Technologists (MSRT) and the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA). She also once again became active in the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Prior to her move to the island she had served as President of Unit 156 (Kirkwood) for three years. Upon her return from the island she became active with Post 397 (Creve Coeur) and was eventually elected President of that Post. During this time she also served as Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice-President of the 10th District. In July, 2017, she was sworn in as President of the 10th District American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. It was one of her proudest moments.
Throughout her life she touched many people with her constant smile and infectious laugh. She never stopped planning her next goal, whether it was another position within one of her societies, a lecture at a conference, or a project for the American Legion. She also loved to travel and was always planning her next adventure.
