Michael Joseph Wolken died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Michael is survived by his loving wife Sharon; his devoted daughters Catherine Burns and Cynthia (Aaron Hedges) Wolken, step-children, Lauren (Zac) Bardou and Greg Schaefer, and his wonderful grandchildren, Kaya Moon Burns, Wyatt Michael and Harper Rose Hedges; his siblings Carol (Tom) Davis, Robert (Vicki) Wolken, Steven (Joan) Wolken, Mary Ellen (Scott) Detring, and Matthew (Mary) Wolken. Brother-in-law of Janet Ponciroli, Jim (Karen) Ponciroli, John (Bev) Ponciroli, Ginny (George) Watermann, Carol (Kevin Abel) Ponciroli, David Ponciroli, Robert (Sue) Ponciroli, Paul (Mary Lee) Gund, Nancy Simon, Lois Brighoff, David Gund, Michael (Susan) Gund, and Barbara (Mark) Wittich; Michael was preceded in death by his first wife Carol Gund Wolken, his brother Donald Wolken, Jr., and his parents Dorothy Farrell and Donald J. Wolken, Sr.
Michael treasured his grandchildren. He was a devoted Irish dance grandpa, supporting his dear Kaya at her competitions and celebrating her academic successes. He visited Montana several times to explore with Harper and Wyatt. He devoted himself to many charitable activities, including foster care and other causes for disadvantaged children. Michael’s greatest joy was his family and he valued his many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Michael is also survived by countless friends, colleagues, and fellow fishermen. He will be remembered by all for his positive attitude, dedication, compassion, and service to others. Sharon and Michael felt very blessed to find each other after Carol’s passing. Their marriage and time together was short, but was filled with laughter and love.
Services: Family and friends will be welcomed on Friday August 31st, from 5pm to 8pm at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd, Kirkwood. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Saturday, September 1st, 10am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 7148 Forsyth, in University City. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Michael’s name to Voices for Children, 105 S. Central Ave., 63105 or Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, 501 N Grand Blvd, 63103.
