Obituary for Gentry Allen Larkin Jr.

Gentry Allen Larkin Jr.
The Larkin family announces with great sadness the loss of Gentry Allen Larkin Jr, on January 6, 2019, at the age of 99 years and 9 months. Known throughout his life by many names, including Junior, Allen, Pop, and even “Old Dog”, Gentry lived a long and happy life surrounded by people who admired him for his wisdom and leadership, and loved him for his never-ending kindness and gentle heart.

Born April 10, 1919 in Festus, Missouri to the late Gentry Sr. and Sadie (Rowe) Larkin, Gentry went on to spend most of his life in the St. Louis area where he graduated from McKinley High School and made a home with his beloved wife Irene (Coe) in Sunset Hills. Together they raised five children and as time passed, their house became a centerpiece for many warm and happy celebrations. Friends, relatives, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many, many dogs all gathered together under Gentry’s roof to share stories, tell jokes, bake pies, and watch the St. Louis Cardinals.

Gentry was a devoted employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for almost 41 years. Upon retirement in 1981, he traveled with Irene throughout the United States and spent many hours on the golf course. The last few years of his life were spent at Bethesda Dilworth, where Gentry formed many dear friendships.

He is survived by his five loving children Gary (& Nancy) Larkin, Cathy (& Allyn) Stanton, Denise Larkin, Dennis Larkin and Lindsey (& Suzanne) Larkin; by eight grandchildren Reagan (& Malcolm Horn) Larkin, Anna Weber, Adrian (& Matthew) Boka, Lauren Weber, Nathaniel (& Victoria) Weber, Johnathan (& Destiny) Larkin, Kelly Larkin, Shawn Larkin and five precious great grandchildren; Grayson, Mackenzie, Rory, Madden, Kirk, and a sixth on the way; his cousins Normabelle Vanderheyden, Arline Blackton, Diann Bilderback, Joann Christian; loving neighbors, including ‘adopted’ daughter Judith Ann Brady, and countless friends.

Gentry was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Irene Coe Larkin, his parents Gentry Sr. and Sadie Larkin, his brother William Richard Larkin, sister-in-law Trudy Larkin James, his many cousins, including Melba Bilderback and Dorothy Watkins, and, of course, his very favorite childhood companion, his dog Sport.

A visitation will be held at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road in Kirkwood, MO on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 2:00pm, followed by a funeral service at 3:00pm. Memorial donations may be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation, in tribute to Gentry’s greatest love, his wife Irene.
