Obituary for Blaine A. Ulmer

Blaine A. Ulmer
Ulmer, Blaine Arthur, long time resident of Kirkwood and Glendale passed February 27, 2019 at age 97. Born to the late Fred Arthur Ulmer and Nita Larie Ulmer (nee Sides) on May 30, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio. Husband of the late Janet Hagen Ulmer; father of David K. (Cecelia) Ulmer, the late James B. (Terry) Ulmer, C. Thomas “Tom” (Caryl) Ulmer; grandfather/papa to Sarah (Steve) Palombo, John, Blaine and Clayton Ulmer; great grandfather of Olivia and Noelle Palombo; dear brother, brother in law, uncle, cousin and great uncle.

Blaine graduated from Webster Groves High School and with an engineering degree from the University of Michigan in 1943. He joined the US Naval Reserve in 1942. He was called to active duty in 1943 and served in the South Pacific with amphibious forces and was released with the rank of Lieutenant. Blaine’s mother was active in music and wrote to Blaine while in the service, about a blonde soloist that she was most impressed with. This blonde soloist became his wife in 1947. Janet helped nurture what became a lifelong interest in music.

Blaine returned to St. Louis, and after working for various employers, started Ulmer Equipment Co. in 1956 in his mother’s home on Orrick Lane. Blaine had many diverse interests: a champion marksman, hunter, fishermen, a noted birder (past President of Webster Groves Nature Study Society aka WGNSS); a published nature photographer, Scout leader, little league coach, Elder and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood- bass in the Chancel Choir; head cheerleader for his sons and grandkids events; member of the Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, to name a few.

In 2002 Blaine and Janet moved to Friendship Village in Sunset Hills where he quickly took leadership roles in a senior political group as well as the men’s chorus, The Troubadours. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Friendship Village and Mercy Hospice.

Memorial Service: Saturday March 16 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood in the Tree of Life Chapel, 100 E. Adams. Memorials appreciated to the Audubon Society (stlaudubon.org), First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood (kirkwoodpres.org), or the donor’s choice of charities.
