Obituary for Larry Taylor Alkire

Larry Taylor Alkire
Larry Taylor Alkire, Friday, May 17, 2019, was born on April 3, 1947 in Warrensburg, MO to Taylor Baxter and Beulah Irene (nee Looney) Alkire.

Larry attended Faucett High School in St. Joseph, MO where he was Valedictorian of his graduating class. He played basketball and was quarterback of the football team. After graduation, he attended the University of Missouri in Columbia where he received a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1971. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity and enjoyed rooting for Mizzou’s sports teams. Then he moved to Troy, MO to raise his first two sons, Brad and Brian. Larry later moved to St. Louis where he worked at The Humane Society of Missouri. While working there he met his beloved wife, Sue and had four more kids, Jonathan, Kristin, Robin and Joy.

Larry enjoyed animals and even made a career out of helping them. When he was younger he was a member of the local 4H Club where he showed cattle. He worked for the Humane Society for 39 years and ended his career working in the surgery department. More recently he would often be seen sitting on his driveway watching the squirrels and chipmunks. He also loved sitting outside during “Hummingbird Happy Hour” and spending time with his little dog-pack including Sherman and Outdoor Abby.

He was a huge sports fan and enjoyed watching and talking sports with his family. He loved to play golf and played on competitive basketball leagues. He was a fan of Mizzou football and had fun tailgating in Columbia for their Saturday games.

He is survived by his wife, Sue (nee Fischer); sister, Linda Guthals of Gower, MO; six children: Brad (Donna) Alkire, Brian (Dawn) Alkire, Jonathan Alkire, Kristin (Tommy) Godsey, Robin (Andrew) Shelby, and Joy Alkire; ten grandchildren: Alyssa, Emma, Madison, Grace, Jacob, Leah, Brendan, Dylan, Fischer, and Lola.

Services: Memorial visitation Thursday, May 23rd, from 4- 6 p.m. immediately followed by Memorial Service at BOPP CHAPEL, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood. Memorial contributions preferred to the Humane Society of Missouri, 1201 Macklind Ave., St. Louis, MO 63110-1481, www.hsmo.org.
