Obituary for Lois Marie Bliss (Wanslow)

Lois Marie Bliss (Wanslow)
Lois Wanslow Bliss, loving wife of the late Malcolm A. Bliss II, died at age 82 peacefully in her sleep on June 12, 2019. Born on December 9, 1936 in Norfolk, Virginia, the daughter of the late Buford Wanslow and Catherine Wanslow (nee Smith). Lois is survived by her brother Robert (Pat) Wanslow, three children Malcolm (Sarah Sivier Bliss and former wife Donna Weber Mueller) Bliss III, Robert (Cindy Alonso Hatfield and former wife Kim Hines Bliss) Bliss, Catherine (Clark Farrell) Bliss Foy, and eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Lois graduated high school from St. Scholastica in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Although she often described herself as a bit of a rebel, she loved and maintained a lifelong relationship with the Sisters and school. It is here where she fell in love with theater. She also performed at The Little Theater in Ft. Smith where her brother was actively involved and her husband contributed with sets and lighting. She loved her theater community.

Lois exemplified volunteerism. Community, education, politics, and health were all important issues to Lois. Joining the The League of Women Voters in 1968 provided her not only a gateway to her community service, but more importantly, she formed friendships with women she respected, admired, and loved. Her dedication to her communities was evident in the multitude of organizations she served.

Lois was a devoted wife of 57 years and a supportive loving mother. Her grandchildren loved and enjoyed her spirit as much as she enjoyed them. Whether discussing politics, books, travels, or love, she listened and spoke with kindness and compassion. She relished her friendships and was forever grateful for their generosity. In her many travels at both home and abroad she reveled in experiencing and learning new things. Her body was donated to St. Louis University School of Medicine.

In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory can be made to: The League of Women Voters, LWVMSTL at 8706 Manchester Rd., Suite 104, St. Louis, MO 63144, or Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region at 4251 Forest Park Avenue, St, Louis, MO 63108, or the Kirkwood Public Library Foundation at 140 East Jefferson Avenue, Kirkwood, MO 63122.

Celebration of Lois Bliss' life scheduled for Saturday, August 31, 2019 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Sunset 44 Bistro (118 W. Adams Avenue, Kirkwood, Missouri 63122).
