Obituary for Jane L. Huffman (Birr)

Jane L. Huffman (Birr)
Huffman, Jane L. (nee Birr) passed away on Monday, June 10, 2019, at age 100. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 66 years, John T. Huffman. Jane was the beloved mother of three children: Judy Taft (Tim), Bill Huffman (Dawn) and Dan Huffman (Jan); much loved grandmother of Todd Taft, Becky Taft Fecher (Aaron), Katherine Huffman Jacinto (Randy), John Huffman, and Kristen Huffman Lemoine (Marc); Loving great-grandmother of Coby Fecher, and Everett and Stella Jacinto. Jane was born in Freeport, IL in 1918. She was the younger daughter of William and Helen (nee Adamson) Birr and sister of Alice Birr Gray (Judson). Jane grew up in St. Louis where her father taught high school history and music. Jane’s most memorable childhood stories included growing up within two blocks of Sportsman’s Park and as a grade schooler, surviving the tornado of 1927 which destroyed her school. Jane attended Washington University, and the University of Missouri where she graduated in 1940. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority, and continued her sorority friendships throughout her life. She taught grade school in St. Louis for two years before devoting her love and attention to being a full-time wife and mother. She became an accomplished seamstress, knitter, and gardener. Through most of her adult life, Jane was a dedicated member of P.E.O., a philanthropic women’s organization. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her outgoing and loving nature, her endearing laughter, and the joy she expressed when with family and friends. Visitation is on Saturday June 22 from 12Noon-1:30 pm at the Meramec Bluffs Chapel, 1 Meramec Bluffs Dr. Ballwin MO 63021. A service and celebration of Jane’s life will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family. requests that memorial gifts be given to the Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments, 1750 S. Big Bend Blvd., St. Louis MO 63117, or P.E.O. Cottey College Scholarship Fund, 1000 West Austin St., Nevada, Mo. 64772.
