Obituary for Amy Hrastich Oppliger (Heege)

Amy Hrastich Oppliger (Heege)
After 101 years the Lord called Amy Louise Heege Hrastich Oppliger to heaven on Saturday, June 15, 2019. She was preceded in death by husband Anthony Hrastich (1986) and second husband Melvin Oppliger (2004). She is survived by both sons, Thomas (Patricia) of St Louis and Allan (Phyllis) of St Clair, Missouri. Six grandchildren, Thomas C., Jeffrey, Thomas W., Matthew, Amy and Andrew. Fourteen great grandchildren, Nolan, Sydney, Emily, Adam, Ryan, Zachary, Jacob, Lucas, Abby, Cora, Salvatore, Madalyn, Amelia and Stella. She is a sister-in-law to Mary Ann Kelley (nee Hrastich) and Madeline (Hrastich) Foster.

She is an Aunt to Christ and Richard Hrastich of St Louis; Christine Matthews, Donna Mikof and Diane Leeds (nee Kelley) of Illinois and Florida; and Redelle Hrastich, Cathy Hrastich Schuster and Kristi Hrastich Bianchi in California. She is also a great aunt to their children.

Amy grew up in Kirkwood, Missouri, the daughter of August and Amy Mae Heege during the depression. After high school she went to work to help support her family. She worked at Union Electric until she married and left because they didn’t employ married women at that time.

After she married, the couple moved to Brentwood and maintained their home until her passing. After her children were in school, she became a “Candy Striper” volunteering County Hospital and she held a part-time job at Stix, Baer & Fuller department store. Later she took a full-time position with St Louis County in the construction permits office until she could retire. As a member of the Brentwood Congregational Church she held several offices and was active in the women’s fellowship and church circle.

Amy enjoyed playing Bridge and traveling. She went to Europe and North Africa with Anthony and went to Israel and Egypt with Melvin. She and Melvin also took several bus tours around the US. Her favorite vacation spot, however, was Siesta Key in Sarasota, Florida, and continued to travel there until walking became difficult.

She lived a long and full life filled with love and happiness, and now she may rest in peace free from her tired body.

Services: Visitation Fri., June 21, 11 am, with service at 1 pm, at BOPP CHAPEL, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood. Interment, Oak Hill Cemetery.
