Obituary for Betty Astroth (Hunt)

Betty Astroth (Hunt)
Betty Hunt Astroth passed away on June 17, 2019, reaching the end of her journey through the grasp of Alzheimer's disease. The only child of the late Myrtie and Kenneth Hunt, Betty, a St. Louis native and lifelong resident, was born in December 1929. Betty is survived by daughter Laurie Astroth of Kirkwood, and daughter Beth Garza and grandsons Gil Garza and Jay Garza of Austin, Texas.

Betty and her parents were South St. Louisan through and through. Her childhood friends from the neighborhood around Wyoming Street south of Tower Grove Park were lifelong companions and family surrogates.

Betty put herself through college, graduating from the University of Missouri with a BA in Education in 1952. While at Mizzou she became a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, an organization she loved and supported for most of her life. She served as the Missouri State Recommendations Chair for many years and received multiple alumnae awards including a National Honor Ring, which she received in 1992. Betty received her White Violet pin in 2001. All honors were displayed proudly in her home.

After graduating from Mizzou, Betty was a schoolteacher in Rolla, Missouri to support herself and husband, Louis E Astroth as he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Betty, Louis and their young daughters moved to Kirkwood in 1962 into the house she loved and where she lived until 2018.

A career educator in St. Louis area schools, Betty's primary focus was late elementary grades, with an emphasis in teaching math. She attended classes nights and summers to earn a MA from Webster College (now University) in 1970. She taught in the Parkway school district for many years, retiring from full-time classroom teaching in 1988. As a divorced mother of two she was able to support her family and send both daughters to college.

In her retirement years Betty volunteered at the First Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood. She was active in the Kirkwood Herb Guild, and the Kirkwood Historical Society as a docent at Mudd’s Grove. She was a regular participant in the activities of the St. Louis alumnae chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha. Betty stayed an active and fit senior and loved traveling the world. In her later years she said, "I've been everywhere I've ever dreamed of going."

Betty's final months were spent in the care of the Sheridan at Laumeier Park and Bethesda Dilworth facilities.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 24 from 9:00 -10:30 at Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood, with private burial to follow.

Donations to Missouri Botanical Gardens in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
