Obituary for Rudolph H. Zuroweste

Rudolph H. Zuroweste
Rudolph Henry Zuroweste III, 81, passed away June 20, 2019 in St. Louis Missouri. Rudy was born on September 27, 1937 in St. Louis to Rudolph and Viola (Larson) Zuroweste. He grew up in Ferguson, MO, and graduated from De Andreis High School. Upon graduation from H.S, he attended St Louis University for one year. Rudy then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956-1958, and stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. He graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Landscape Design and a Master’s Degree in Horticulture. He earned an MBA at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. He worked for the Missouri Highway Department, the University of Missouri Extension, and also as an executive for Evergreen Lawns. He was a frequent guest on KMOX Radio “At Your Service”, sharing his insight and expertise in horticultural matters. He retired from the Missouri Highway Department in 1999.

Rudy enjoyed a simple lifestyle; playing the piano, listening to Classical music, golfing, jogging, taking walks, spending time with his daughters and eating out at his favorite restaurants. He also found enjoyment working in his yard and growing a variety of plants, trees, flowers and shrubs. When his daughters were young, Rudy enjoyed helping coach the AAU Kirkwood Women’s Track Club, as well as assisting with the Girl Scout Mounted Horse Troop.

Rudy will be remembered for his great sense of humor and wit, for his ability to turn an everyday occurrence into a fabulous story, and for his love of a great meal at one of his favorite restaurants.

Rudy is survived by his three daughters, Susan Darby & husband Mike, Karen Gibson & husband Jeff, Kathy DeGonia & husband Dave, his former wife Joan, his sister Betty Oppliger & husband Norman, cousin Bob Nelson & wife Mary, cousin Edward Nelson & wife Sheila, and his grandchildren Jenny, Ashley, Michael, Mary-Kate, Mia, Katerina, Leah and Jenna.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 2 from 6pm – 8pm at Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood, Missouri. A funeral service will be held at Bopp Chapel on Wednesday July 3 at 10am with burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in South County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Missouri Botanical Garden or Forest ReLeaf of Missouri.
