Edith L Aitkenhead (Hamilton)
Edith LeRow Aitkenhead (nee Hamilton) died in St. Louis, MO, on October 22, 2019 at age 97. She was born June16, 1922 in Canadian, Texas, to Ann (Oswald) and Munro Hamilton. Her sister, Emma, predeceased her. Growing up on a cattle ranch in the Texas Panhandle, Edith attended school in Allison, Texas where she was on a state championship basketball team. Upon graduation, she attended West Texas State College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree.
While in college, she met her husband, Harold M. Aitkenhead. The couple married in Oklahoma City on October 6, 1945 and moved to St. Louis where they built a house in Glendale. They had three children, Jan Carter (Bob MacKay), Joan Taylor (Dr. Robert), and Jim Aitkenhead (Theresa). The family was active at Glendale Presbyterian Church where Edith taught Sunday School for many years. Edith was also active in the Glendale Women’s Club.
In 1959, the family moved to Kirkwood where Edith became a member of the Kirkshire Hills Garden Club. She and Harold enjoyed travelling around the world and entertaining friends at home. She also enjoyed embroidery and made many beautiful quilts. Harold died in 2007. In 2010, Edith moved to Cape Albeon, first living in the Harbor and then moving to the assisted living facility, the Villages. She enjoyed visits from friends and family.
