Obituary for Lorraine Adrienne Finley (Obermeyer)

Lorraine Adrienne Finley (Obermeyer)
***PLEASE SEE CHANGES***
DUE TO CONCERNS REGARDING THE COVID-19 VIRUS, SERVICES FOR MRS. LORRAINE FINLEY HAVE BEEN POSTPONED AT THIS TIME. NEW SERVICE DATES AND TIMES WILL BE UPDATED AS SOON AS THEY ARE SCHEDULED. PLEASE KEEP HER FAMILY IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS, AS THIS HAS NOT BEEN AN EASY DECISION FOR THEM.

Finley, Lorraine A. (nee Obermeyer), Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Monday, March 9, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Thomas A. Finley; dear mother of Patricia Finley, Antoinette “Toni” (Willard) Hodges, Capt. Theodore “Ted” (Margaret) Finley, Theresa “Terri” (the late Richard) Gabler, Kathleen Finley; proud grandmother of Joe, Anne, Kathleen, Mary, Joe, Rebecca, Alice, Thomas, Katie, Tom, Greg and Christian; loving GiGi of Evan, Matthew, Killian, Reagan, Carson and Anthony; dear aunt, sister, sister-in-law, cousin and friend of many.

Lorraine Finely was born, Lorraine Adrienne Obermeyer on Jan. 4, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri to Theodore and Dagmar (pronounced Dolma) Obermeyer. Lorraine was born in the flat above her family’s bakery at South Grand Boulevard and N. Utah Place in St. Pius V Parish. Lorraine’s father was born in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France and was a 9th generation baker. Together with her parents and siblings, Lorraine worked in the bakery. Lorraine is preceded in death, by both of her parents and her four siblings: Antoinette, Theodore, Joseph and Eugene.

Lorraine’s family moved to Springfield, Illinois for most of her childhood where Lorraine attended Sacred Heart Academy. The family moved back to St. Louis and Lorraine attended Normandy High School for her senior year. Lorraine did graduate at the top of her class but was asked by the school Superintendent and the Principal to take 2nd place to allow a male student to be recognized as the Summa Cum Laude recipient. Lorraine was told this student worked so hard it would crush his ego to be surpassed by a girl. In addition, Lorraine received a full scholarship to St. Louis University, which she chose not to accept. Out of loyalty to her family, Lorraine chose to work in the family business.
As it turned out, it wasn’t a bad thing. Working for her father allowed Lorraine to take off whenever she wanted. She was able to quench her love of history and desire to travel. As a single woman, Lorraine traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada by train.
One day a very charming “character” came into the bakery and this was the beginning of a beautiful love story. Lorraine met the love of her life, Tom Finley. They married on April 4, 1951. They had five children: Patricia, Antoinette, Theodore, Theresa and Kathleen. Tom and Lorraine ran a successful real estate business in St. Louis. They would share their love of travel with their children and took many wonderful vacations. Being a natural historian, Lorraine would research the areas the family was traveling to and was a very well-versed tour guide, no matter the destination. When the family wasn’t traveling, Lorraine’s favorite place to spend time was the St. Louis Art Museum and she shared her love of art and design with her children. Lorraine also enjoyed sailing with her husband and going out every Saturday night to listen to live music.
Lorraine was a very generous person with her time and money. She donated to every Mission that requested money. She also donated her time to the Jewish Community Center Association for their adult daycare program. As a loving act of mercy, Lorraine would spend many afternoons at Our Little Haven rocking and consoling the sick babies born to drug addicted mothers.
Lorraine was a devoted wife and mother who loved caring for her family. Tom and Lorraine had 51 wonderful years of marriage before Tom’s death in 2002. Her children, 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren will miss all the precious times and memories they shared with her. God bless Sweet Lorraine.

Funeral Mass Thurs., Mar. 19, 10:30 a.m. at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 15642 Clayton Rd., Ellisville with visitation a half hour prior to service at church. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cardinal Ritter Senior Services. Visitation Wed. 4-8 p.m. at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood.
