The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Thomas Merz can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Obituary for Thomas David Merz

Merz, Thomas David, 72, Baptized into the Hope of Christ’s Resurrection on October 27, 2020. Son of the late Albert Joseph Merz and Helen Angela Merz (nee Seely). Tom was the youngest of seven children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Betty Merz and Joan (the late Don) Cox. Tom is survived by siblings Marcella (the late G. Thomas) Stubblefield, Don (Judy) Merz, Bob (Rita) Merz, and Rich (Edna) Merz, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Tom was a graduate of St. John Vianney High School. His youthful energy, good nature, and wit were slowly eroded by persistent and debilitating epilepsy and associated health problems since age 5 which culminated with Covid-19. He lived the last 32 years of life in nursing facilities, and we would like to express our gratitude to all those who provided for his welfare and medical care during those years.

Due to the pandemic, a private family funeral service will be conducted at Bopp Chapel followed by interment alongside Tom’s parents and sister Betty in St. Peter Cemetery - Kirkwood, MO. If desired, contributions may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of Missouri and Kansas, 4406 St. Vincent, Saint Louis, MO 63119. www.efmk.org/give/
